US disengages with Russia on arms exports – SIPRI

Russian arms exports to India fell sharply, but deliveries to China and Egypt increased.

The US share of global arms exports rose from 33% to 40%, while Russia’s share fell from 22% to 16% between 2013-17 and 2018-22. This is stated in the report of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), published on Monday, March 13.

“US arms exports grew by 14% between 2013-2017 and 2018-2022, and the US accounted for 40% of global arms exports in 2018-2022. The -Russia’s arms exports decreased by 31% between 2013-17 and 2018-2020 its share of global arms exports decreased from 22% to 16%, while France’s share increased from 7.1 % to 11%,” the report said.

Analysts point out that global arms exports have long been dominated by the United States and Russia, the largest and second largest arms exporters for the past three decades. But now the gap between them has widened significantly, and the gap between Russia and the third largest supplier, France, has narrowed.

SIPRI added that Russian arms exports fell to 8 of the top 10 recipients between 2013-17 and 2018-2022.

Exports to India, the largest recipient of Russian weapons, fell by 37%, while exports to seven other countries fell by an average of 59%. However, Russian arms exports to China (+39%) and Egypt (+44%) increased. These countries became the second and third largest recipients of arms from Russia.

“It is likely that the invasion of Ukraine will further limit arms exports from Russia. This is because Russia will prioritize the supply of their armed forces, and demand from other states will remain low due to sanctions on trade against Russia and increasing pressure from the United States and its allies not to buy Russian arms,” said Simon T. Wezeman, senior fellow in SIPRI’s arms transfer program.

Earlier on Monday, it became known that Ukraine ranked third in terms of arms imports in the world. This happened against the background of the war with Russia.
