Companies that want to send aid to Ukraine via the German railway must fully pay for transportation.
A subsidiary of the German railway carrier Deutsche Bahn – DB Cargo, which is engaged in cargo transportation and logistics, has stopped delivering humanitarian cargo to Ukraine free of charge. On Friday, March 10, Spiegel wrote.
The publication clarified that the company has not delivered goods for free since the beginning of the year.
“Companies that want to send aid to Ukraine have to pay in full for transportation, which now amounts to up to 6,000 euros per container,” the newspaper wrote.
The reason is believed to be a long-standing dispute between DB Cargo and the German Ministry of Transport regarding transport financing.
The Deutsche Bahn subsidiary has reportedly applied for state financial support for the initiative several times because, as a joint-stock company, it can receive limited outside funding.
However, until the end of last year, no decision was reached between the relevant ministry and the carrier, so donor organizations were notified of the “temporary suspension of free transportation.”
The carrier also indicated that in 2022 alone, DB Cargo spent around five million euros to deliver humanitarian aid.
Earlier it became known that the Red Cross was helping the occupiers in the Mariupol district of the Donetsk region.
It will be remembered that in December 2022, Metinvest launched a humanitarian prosthetics project aimed at people who cannot pay for it. At the moment, according to the company’s press service, 34 people are participating in it.
