The Japanese government has introduced changes to the law that will allow the export of weapons to Ukraine.
Japan considers exporting weapons to countries resisting aggression. In particular, this applies to Ukraine. This is stated in the proposal of the Japanese government, according to Nikkei Asia.
“So far, Japan has only sent bulletproof vests and other non-lethal equipment to Ukraine. Under current rules, Tokyo can transfer aircraft, armored vehicles and missiles to countries with develops and manufactures equipment,” the article said.
The Japanese government, as well as the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, have floated the idea of expanding the number of countries that have the right to export weapons. Thus, countries attacked by aggressor forces would qualify for arms export.
According to Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, expanded military exports “will be an important political tool to help countries subjected to aggression that violates international law.”
The Deputy of the upper chamber, Masahisa Sato, proposed to send multiple launch rocket systems to Ukraine.
The government and the ruling coalition will begin debating arms exports after local elections in April.
As previously reported, Ukraine will receive an aid grant from Japan in the amount of $170 million for the implementation of the Rapid Recovery Plan for Ukraine.
In addition, we wrote earlier that Japan intends to provide $5.5 billion in aid to Ukraine.
