Before / After. how an apartment with decor from another era is transformed into a modern breathing space

When the 78 m² apartment was completely opened, the work of the Carmin agency was to restructure it so that the living room occupied 50% of the surface. The agency also played with the modern spirit and family portraits of its clients. Carmine

Together with his team, Tristan Dohi, founder of interior design studio Carmin, reconstructed and transformed a 1960s Parisian apartment. The result: a decidedly modern spirit where the living room takes center stage.

Hôtel du lac in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Hotel Ségur Eiffel in Paris, Le Rooftop restaurant in Angoulême… Carmine’s work can be admired everywhere in France in fashionable places. Established in 2016, this interior design agency also works for residential projects. Its founder, Tristan Dohi, a graduate of the Boule School and the Polytechnic University of Milan, who notably cut his teeth with the Milanese architect and designer Sergio Calatroni, takes us on a tour of a 1960s Parisian apartment. become a modern and artistic space.

The starting point

“Our clients immediately felt the potential of this 78 m² apartment located on the avenue Domesnil in the 12th arrondissement of Paris. They especially realized that they would have better quality and more affordable space by investing in this 1960’s property rather than opting for a Haussmannian house. In this type of architecture, where everything is designed around columns and beams, a technical feat abandoned in the 1980s, it’s actually possible to bare everything without fear of being blocked by multiple load-bearing walls. So it’s easy to revise the layout. A real good point we used. So we knocked out all the bulkheads, leaving only three posts and a beam around which the whole layout revolved. So we started with a blank page, which allowed us to integrate the personality of our clients, who were sensitive to interior design, had a keen taste in art and had quite a few paintings from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Everything between us was very fluid. As a result, the project lasted only three and a half months. We anticipated everything and the work started the day after the sale. »

Then, the transformed space made it possible to integrate the kitchen into the living room. Carmine

Then, in the living room, the living room with its designer furniture overlooks the kitchen-dining room. Carmine

“Our clients wanted a kitchen in the living room. So we converted the old kitchen into an office and installed the new one in the living room, which faces south and overlooks the Domesneil Avenue canopy. Since the apartment is located at 3e floor, it’s very nice because you have a perspective, and in spring, the feeling of being hidden in the leaves. We designed the kitchen in two parts. There is a large white resin cabinet that fits into the space. behind is the bathroom. The other part is a cabinet with a small depth, 50 cm instead of the usual 60/65, which makes it possible to minimize the visual impact. We designed it with precious materials, painted oak paneling and granite. It is in this space formed by these two elements that the dining room is placed with its Gravity suspension from Forestier, light and graphic.

On the window side, we designed a rolling piece of furniture extended with a cabinet on wheels that hides the TV stand. So it is possible to move this dresser in the center between dining room and living room to watch TV. For this we have provided earthing sockets. Opposite the kitchen, on the other side of this living room, is the living room. The walls are white and the modern decorative pieces, such as the Zanotta sofa, have already belonged to our customers. We mixed old family pictures with modern photos. it was fun to play with the contrasts of this period. Also interesting in this room is the extension of the decorative ceiling in the entrance, which also has a made-to-measure bookcase and lacquered in the same blue as the walls. The choice of this false ceiling is related to a technical limitation. It is used to mask a poorly positioned beam. It allows you to create something like a cornice, and a sense of equality between the entrance and the living room. This ceiling is covered in wallpaper designed by Jean Paul Gaultier, inspired by Japanese yakuza tattoos. »

Master bedroom

Then, a small cocoon-like bedroom, painted midnight blue. Carmine

“The rooms are intentionally small. Our clients essentially wanted to contribute to the living space occupying 50% of the floor area. The master bedroom, like the children’s bedroom, is therefore 9 m². We come here to sleep. So we created a cocoon effect. This bedroom is a very zen and quiet envelope, hence the choice of this very dark, calm blue. A mirrored front hides a wardrobe selected from Ikea. It expands the space. Here, as in the living room, we have combined artworks from different periods – picture 19e Barbizon School and Contemporary Photographs. »

The bathroom

Then, a bathroom with subtle colors. Carmine

“It has roughly the same proportions as the previous bathroom. We preferred the large shower over the tub and added a toilet (there are other toilets). We combined a powder pink tile and another imitation stone to create softness. »

Children’s room

After that, a cheerful children’s room with its wallpaper signed by Jean Paul Gaultier Lelièvre. Carmine

“The same volume as the master bedroom, this bedroom for two children is full of its yellow details, which match the blue, common threads of this apartment. As a reminder of the entryway ceiling, we also installed a graphic whale motif wallpaper from Lelièvre based on sketches by Jean Paul Gaultier. »
