Khmaladze arrived in Tbilisi on 6 March. At the entrance to Georgia, he was held at passport control for a long time without explanation. Already in the city of Khmaladze noticed surveillance.
The Georgian police detained Nadym Khmaladze, who fought as a volunteer in Ukraine on the side of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and returned to Tbilisi. On Thursday, March 9, Radio Liberty reports.
According to journalists, the detention of Khmaladze was also confirmed by the Georgian Interior Ministry. It happened in Freedom Square in Tbilisi on March 8, around 16.00.
“The man was accused of disobeying the police and hooliganism. That day, his relatives searched for him for several hours, until the lawyer found out that he was in the Zagesi pre-trial detention center,” the report said.
The detainee’s lawyer pointed out that Khmaladze was detained by criminal police.
“Neither he nor I have seen the detention protocol. He was told verbally that it was about verbal abuse, which is difficult to prove – during detention he cannot commit a crime, he gives an interview to a journalist,” said Tornike Bakradze.
It should be noted that Khmaladze was one of the first Georgian volunteers who went to Ukraine and took an active part in the battles against Russia. According to the lawyer, at the entrance to Georgia, Khmaladze was kept in passport control for a long time without explanation. In the city Khmaladze noticed that he was being followed.
It will be remembered that after the adoption of the bill on “foreign agents” in the first reading, protests took place in the center of Tbilisi for two days, accompanied by clashes with law enforcement officers. During the protests, the police detained a total of 133 people.
The ruling Georgian Dream party and the Power of the People movement decided to withdraw the bill on “foreign agents” so as not to “increase social discord.”
