Minister of Internal Affairs, Vincent Romero Fernandezassured that the country now lives in a democratic system “thanks to the historic decision of the National Police to neutralize the coup d’état”, alluding to the social protests that are taking place in various regions where part of the Peruvians are asking for, among other things, the resignation of President Dina Boluarte and the promotion of general elections .

In his speech before the plenary session of Congress, the place where he traveled to respond to the three interpellation papers, the member of the Executive branch indicated that in the face of a “dangerous scenario for the stability and permanence of the democratic system”, his sector sent human, logistical and logistical -technical resources for “strengthening the rule of law and the principle of power”.

Vincent Romero He confirmed that police officers acted harshly against “persons responsible for acts of vandalism and damage” in the context of social demonstrations. “The principle of authority prevailed at all times,” he said.

“As of March 6, 819 detainees were registered, 519 were in charge of the current administration. From December 2022 to March 2023 we have 143 riot cases in Lima; 182 national riot and obstruction trials, excluding Lima; 17 detainees with preventive detention, 4 of them for crimes of mass disorder and 13 for obstructing the work of public services at the national level without including Lima, with imprisonment from one month to 9 months, as part of an immediate process,” he explained.

expressed condolences

The Minister of the Interior specified that “as a result of the correct strategy of the police, on January 19, the so-called “capture of Lima” was thwarted. “About 90,200 people tried to move from the regions to Lima. They wanted to take advantage of the limited number of agents and insufficiently equipped police force to return to the previous government by violent means after the release of former President Castillo,” he said.

Expressing his condolences to the families of those killed in the social protests, Vicente Romero said that National Police create a Human Rights Office.
