The Hungarian delegation announced that the country’s parliament would ratify Sweden’s application to join NATO.
Hungary supports Sweden’s bid for NATO membership. This was announced on Tuesday, March 7, by the Hungarian parliamentary delegation after a meeting with the speaker of the Swedish parliament, the purpose of which was to smooth over, as Hungarian party officials said, “political disputes,” Radio Liberty reports.
However, some Hungarian lawmakers have questioned whether Sweden and Finland’s NATO membership bids will be supported, given what they say are Stockholm and Helsinki’s “outright lies” about the state of democracy in Hungary.
But the Hungarian delegation assured on March 7 that the country’s parliament will approve Sweden’s bid to join NATO, the AP reported.
“We support Sweden’s NATO membership,” Csaba Hende, vice-speaker of the Hungarian parliament, told Swedish news agency TT.
As reported last week, Hungary postponed the vote on the ratification of the application of Sweden and Finland to join NATO – the parliamentary session, which will start on March 20.
The entry of Sweden and Finland into NATO has already been approved by 28 of the 30 member countries of the Alliance (except Turkey and Hungary). Turkey’s talks with Sweden and Finland on their NATO membership bids will resume on March 9.
