Canadian authorities intend to transfer hundreds of modern reconnaissance drones to Ukraine. Negotiations on this have been completed, according to the National Post.
Ottawa is believed to be in talks to supply Ukraine with hundreds of high-tech Canadian-made drones, described by the Ukrainians as “the only product on the market that meets all operational needs,” said report.
It was noted that the Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Sviridenko sent a letter to the Ministers of Defense and Finance of Canada in the summer with a request for the provision of 300 Teledyne Flir R70 Skyranger drones produced in the province of Ontario. According to him, tactical drones play an important role on the battlefield, and their own developments in Ukraine have “strong limitations.” In particular, they are vulnerable to electronic warfare and have limited use at night and in bad weather. At the same time, the Canadian drone is equipped with a thermal imager and the functions of intercepting signals and detecting chemical weapons needed by the defenders of Ukraine.
“The R70’s ability to intercept the signal will be especially useful, as it will allow the drone to see the location of enemy phones and even recognize faces,” the National Post said.
Canada’s Department of Defense declined to comment on progress on a drone deal and why Ukraine’s request has gone unanswered for so long.
Earlier, Canada announced that it will send Ukraine additional Leopard 2 tanks.
