Citizens of Georgia are protesting against the adoption of the bill on “foreign agents”. The police use tear gas and water cannon.
On Tuesday, March 7, the Parliament of Georgia adopted in the first reading a bill on the transparency of foreign influence, which largely inherits the Russian law on “foreign agents”. Clashes broke out between protesters and law enforcement officers under the walls of the parliament, Ekho Kavkaz reported.
76 representatives of the ruling party Georgian Dream voted for the draft law, 13 parliamentarians voted against.
Considering the project that on March 7 was a surprise, it was initially planned that it would be brought to the hall on March 9. The discussion began in the absence of a majority of opposition deputies.
A protest is taking place under the parliament building, where participants are chanting Not in Russian law, Stand on the right side of history.
Clashes have begun between protesters and law enforcement officers. Law enforcement officials did not give the protesters a chance to approach the entrance to the parliament. Special forces use water cannons and tear gas to disperse the protesters.
It should be noted that the bill on the transparency of foreign influence concerns non-governmental organizations and media that receive foreign funding.
Several hundred non-governmental organizations and media in Georgia signed a statement against the adoption of the law. Serious concern regarding the Georgian legislative initiative has been expressed by the US State Department and the European Union.
