In particular, the proposal, presented by Liberal representative Thierry Burkart, provided for the lifting of the ban on the re-export of military equipment to countries “committed to Swiss values and with an export control regime. comparable to the Swiss regime.”
He noted that Germany, Spain and Denmark have already applied to Switzerland for permission to re-export and received a negative response.
“Bern’s Western partner countries are disgusted by this position,” the parliamentarian stressed.
However, during the discussions, some members of the Council of Cantons expressed their principled opposition to lifting the re-export ban, as they saw it as a threat to Switzerland’s reputation as a neutral intermediary state. .
In the end, 23 MPs voted against Burkart’s motion, 18 voted in favor, and two abstained.
The Council of Cantons, or the upper house of parliament, represents the interests of the cantons. It consists of 46 members elected by the people for 4 years.
