The court delivered verdicts in absentia in the criminal case of the members of the Coordinating Council of the Belarusian opposition.
The Minsk City Court sentenced ex-presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya in absentia to 15 years in prison, Belta reported on Monday, March 6.
Tikhanovskaya was found guilty of “a conspiracy aimed at usurping state power in an unconstitutional manner.”
He was also accused of “creating an extremist formation and leading it, publicly calling for the seizure of power and actions aimed at harming the national security of Belarus.”
In addition, the court sentenced opposition politician, ex-diplomat Pavel Latushko to 18 years in prison. Three other defendants in the case – Maria Moroz, Olga Kovalkova and Sergei Dilevsky – were sentenced to 12 years in prison.
It will be remembered that in 2020 Tikhanovskaya took part in the presidential election in Belarus after the CEC disallowed her husband. Later, Sergei Tikhanovsky was detained and sentenced to 18 years in prison. He was found guilty of inciting violence against the authorities and preparing riots in the country.
Tikhanovskaya said her husband was imprisoned “on charges of a crime he did not commit, at the provocation of special services” to prevent him from participating in the elections.
