The ex-deputy said that the supply of Bulgarian arms to Kyiv was mainly financed by the UK, Poland and the United States.
For two years, Bulgaria supplied Ukraine with weapons worth more than a billion dollars through third countries. This was reported in an investigation by the EURActiv portal.
It was noted that the “indirect” sale of arms and ammunition to Ukraine was before the war, contrary to the official position of the Bulgarian authorities.
According to the former deputy of the National Assembly of Bulgaria, Velizar Shalamanov, Bulgarian companies do not sell weapons and ammunition directly to Ukrainian customers, because there is a practice of implementing transactions through foreign programs . He said that the supply of Bulgarian arms to Kyiv was mainly financed by the UK, Poland and the United States.
According to the publication, the Bulgarian arms industry in 2022 recorded sales of products abroad, especially in Poland and Romania, where weapons were sent to Ukraine.
It is reported that the largest state-owned arms factory has reported a 100% increase in sales, and the value of arms export permits issued by Bulgaria since February 2022 is estimated at € 1.1-1.3 billion. At the same time, the country’s Ministry of Economy and Industry says that from February 24, 2022 to January 2023, “no applications for foreign trade transactions with Ukrainian companies and government agencies were submitted for consideration by export control commission, and, accordingly, no export permits have been issued for this period.”
Earlier, the German edition of Die Welt reported on Bulgaria’s secret supply of ammunition to Kyiv. It was noted that in the spring of last year, Sofia provided up to a third of the needs of the armed forces of Ukraine.
It was also reported that Bulgaria will continue the production of 122 mm shells, which will be supplied exclusively for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
