Negotiations are underway on the construction of a tank plant in Ukraine. The head of the Rheinmetall concern hopes that a decision will be made in the next two months.
The German arms concern Rheinmetall intends to build a tank plant in Ukraine. Negotiations on this are ongoing. This was said by the head of the company, Armin Papperger, Spiegel reports.
“For about 200 million euros, a Rheinmetall plant can be built in Ukraine, which will produce up to 400 (tank – ed.) Panthers per year. The negotiations with the Ukrainian government are promising, and I hope that a decision will be made in the next two months,” said Papper.
According to him, the plant can be protected from Russian air raids, and “protection by air defense will not be difficult.”
“To win the war, Ukraine needs from 600 to 800 tanks, and to meet this need, production must be established immediately,” said the head of Rheinmetall.
He noted that even if Germany were to abandon all 300 Leopard 2 tanks available to the Bundeswehr, it would be too few.
According to Papperger, the concern is currently working “in full force” and is producing about 250 tanks.
“We have already commissioned more than 40 Marder infantry fighting vehicles, and by the end of the year there will be about 100 of them. Of the 50 Leopard 2A4 tanks, about 30 are ready. There are also about 100 old Leopard 1 models, if where we can return 88 vehicles,” he said.
Papperger believes that the war in Ukraine will continue, “probably for years to come.”
“The allies of the West are sending enough weapons to enable Ukraine to defend itself, but now the Ukrainians do not have enough equipment to fully recover their territory,” said the head of Rheinmetall.
Recall that the German defense concern Rheinmetall AG began to deliver to Ukraine automatic reconnaissance systems using UAVs.
It was previously reported that Rheinmetall is ready to supply Ukraine with ammunition for Leopard 2 tanks.
According to media reports, the Skynex air defense system will be manufactured in Germany for Ukraine.
