A team of scientists have discovered a passage nine meters long and two meters wide hidden in the Great Pyramid. CheopsThis was announced on Thursday by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities of Egypt.
The tunnel has a triangular roof and was “discovered on the north side of the Great Pyramid of King Cheops,” Tourism Minister Ahmed Issa said in Giza, on the plateau where the more than 4,500-year-old mausoleum stands.
The discovery was made thanks to the ScanPyramids project, an international scientific mission that studies the interior of the pyramids without the need for excavation.
The universities of France, Germany, Canada and Japan, as well as a group of Egyptian experts, are collaborating on the project.
The mission has been analyzing the inside of the pyramid since 2015 thanks to modern technology that allows them to see through the structures.
These tools manage to detect possible voids or unknown internal structures.
“Protect something”?
According to archaeologist Zahi Hawass, who chairs the scientific committee that oversaw the project, it is “quite possible” that the tunnel is “protecting something”.
“In my opinion, he protects the real burial chamber of the king. Cheopssaid one who was also the country’s former minister of antiquities.

The monument, 139 meters high and 230 meters wide, stands on the Giza plateau next to the Sphinx and the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaur.
In 2017, ScanPyramida scientists revealed the presence of a huge hole in the pyramid, the size of a passenger plane.
