Far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) called for a “safe space” for Republicans and responded on Twitter.
Critics derided Greene as a “snowflake” and suggested his comment was “beyond parody” because the idea of safe spaces has long been ridiculed by his fellow GOP extremists.
“We want our own safe space and we deserve it,” Greene told Fox News’ Sean Hannity in an interview about his vision for a “national divorce.”
Greene’s proposal would involve separating the country into “red states and blue states,” with Americans going from blue to red temporarily disenfranchised. The idea was interpreted by some as a call for secession.
But speaking to Hannity, Greene said he wasn’t talking about separate countries or secession or trying to start a civil war, but “shrinking the size of our federal government and giving more power and control to our states to be the identity that we I wish you well. .” or whether he is blue or red” because “the division here has reached a dangerous point”.
“We’re tired of the Democrats’ policies, we’re tired of the waking ideology being shoved down our throats, and we’re tired of brainwashing our kids with these ideas,” he said. “We want our safe space and we deserve it.”
