Iran has the technical capability to rapidly produce an atomic bomb, the US defense department has asserted.
Iran needs 12 days to produce the material for a nuclear bomb. This was announced on Tuesday, February 28, by US Deputy Secretary of Defense for Political Affairs Colin Kahl in a hearing in the House of Representatives, writes Reuters.
So, he answered the question “why did the Biden administration seek to renew the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)”.
“Because Iran’s nuclear development since we left the JCPOA has been effective. In 2018, when the previous administration decided to withdraw from the JCPOA, it would have taken Iran about 12 months to produce fissile material for a bomb . 12 days,” Kahl said.
It is known that in 2018, US President Donald Trump removed the country from the agreement and imposed new sanctions against Iran.
He called the deal unfair and expressed doubt that it would limit Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.
Earlier in 2015, Iran, US, Russia, France, Germany, UK and China signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions against Iran.
The International Nuclear Energy Agency is discussing with Iran recent findings on uranium enrichment at the country’s nuclear facilities.
Earlier, Bloomberg reported that Tehran has managed to enrich uranium, its purity is only 6% below the level required to create nuclear weapons.
