War in Ukraine. 10,000 protesters in Berlin call for ‘diplomacy, not arms delivery’

Around 10,000 people, according to police, rallied in central Berlin on Saturday to call for talks with Moscow rather than arming Ukraine, a year and a day after the Russian invasion.

Organized by far-left politician Sahra Wagenknecht and feminist Alice Schwarzer, this rally has the slogan:stand up for peaceis extremely controversial, especially because far-right figures have joined this initiative.

Beneath the Brandenburg Gate, Wagenknecht and Schwarzer took the stage, calling “diplomacy, not arms supplyin front of an audience of protesters who gathered to brave the cold and melting snow.

Fear of collisions

From February 10, Wagenknecht and Schwarzer also launched an online petition entitled “manifesto for peacewhich requires more than 645,000 signatures.

According to the representative of the Berlin police, other demonstrations of the same movement, as well as counter-demonstrations, have been announced. Fearing clashes, the police mobilized around 1,400 policemen.

On Friday, the day after the Russian attack, many demonstrations took place in Germany against the war in Ukraine, including at the Brandenburg Gate, which was lit up in the colors of the Ukrainian flag.
