Russia kept silent about the anniversary of the war against Ukraine, most likely because after a year the Kremlin failed to achieve any of its stated goals.
So say the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Despite the fact that Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly made public statements over the past week, on February 24 he remained eloquently silent.
The decision not to comment on the anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine may be due to the fact that Russia has not made any notable territorial gains since July last year, ISW analysts write in their daily summary.
The day before, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said that Moscow would claim victory in the war. It is important to move the borders of threats to our country as far as possible, even if it will be the borders of Poland,” he wrote.
According to ISW, the Kremlin is using the former Russian president to divert attention from Russia’s military failures.
Medvedev’s statements underline the fact that the Kremlin continues to pursue unrealistic maximalist goals despite being unable to offer the Russian people significant gains after a year of expensive war in Ukraine, the researchers say.
