Because of the war in Ukraine, the country’s authorities are really aware of their unwillingness to rely on Russia for gas imports.
The Netherlands has eliminated its dependence on Russian gas because of Russia’s massive invasion of Ukraine. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, Wopke Gukstra, Ukrinform reports on Saturday, February 25.
The official emphasized that the war has made his country very aware of its unwillingness to rely on Russia for gas imports.
“The Netherlands is no longer dependent on Russian pipeline gas imports… We have taken various measures aimed at diversifying our sources of imports. I am glad that I can say we succeeded,” the minister said.
Gukstra also assured that the Netherlands will support Ukraine as long as necessary, and regardless of future costs.
Recall that a year ago the European Union was 40% dependent on Russian gas, but today this figure has dropped to 7% and continues to decline.
