China has published a so-called “peace plan” with its own ideas for resolving the war in Ukraine, which Russia unreasonably started.
The document contains 12 paragraphs. It speaks of respect for the sovereignty of all countries, the rejection of the “Cold War mentality”, the cessation of hostilities, the resumption of peace negotiations and the resolution of the humanitarian crisis. The plan also contains information about the protection of the civilian population and prisoners of war and maintaining the safety of nuclear power plants. This was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China.
The document proposed by Beijing also contains the following points:
- Reduction of strategic risks;
- Promoting the export of grain;
- Ending “unilateral” sanctions;
- maintaining the stability of industrial chains and supply chains;
- Promoting post-war reconstruction.
However, this document lacks clear recommendations on how to bring about a ceasefire. It is only noted that “all parties should support Russia and Ukraine in working in the same direction and the soonest restoration of direct dialogue in order to gradually de-escalate the situation and ultimately achieve a comprehensive ceasefire.”
Recall that on February 23, the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly approved a draft resolution incorporating the key provisions of the “peace formula” proposed by Ukraine in the fall of 2022. China abstained from voting for this document.
