The UN General Assembly on Thursday, February 23, supported the resolution on the Ukrainian formula for peace.
The resolution “On the foundations of the UN Charter, which underlie a comprehensive, just and strong peace in Ukraine”, was supported by 141 countries. Seven states voted against and 32 countries abstained from voting. The document notes the need to achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace as soon as possible in accordance with the founding Charter of the United Nations. This was discussed during the broadcast of the meeting.
In particular, Belarus, Eritrea, Mali, North Korea, Nicaragua, Syria and the aggressor country, the Russian Federation, voted against. Abstentions included China, Armenia, India, Iran, Kazakhstan and Pakistan.
The resolution of the Ukrainian peace formula contains a demand for Russia to “immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all its armed forces from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.” It also calls for the proper treatment of prisoners of war, full respect for international humanitarian law, and an immediate halt to attacks on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure.
The resolution adopted by the UN also mentions the need to “ensure accountability for the gravest crimes under international law committed on the territory of Ukraine through appropriate, fair and independent investigations and prosecutions at the national or international level.” In addition, the document calls on UN members to cooperate to overcome the global consequences of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmitry Kuleba called the vote of the UN General Assembly for the resolution of the Ukrainian “peace formula” a defeat for Russia.
The diplomat stressed that from now on, any peace proposals that may be made in the future from this or that state should be within the framework of this resolution and comply with its key parameters. And what is not in the resolution, it will be very difficult for other countries to sell as an additional constructive element of their peace plan.
According to the minister, yesterday’s vote at the UN completely destroyed the myth that only the West seems to support Ukraine.
141 countries, including the absolute majority of Latin American countries, Asian countries, most African countries, all voted in favor of the resolution, Kuleba said in a video message posted on Facebook.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also reacted to the historic decision. On Twitter, he thanked all the countries that supported the critically important resolution.
Recall that before the vote of the resolution in support of Ukraine, UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and called the war unleashed by Moscow “an insult to the collective conscience” of the world community.
