The European Union intends to ease oil sanctions against Russia in the sixth package. Budapest, however, said they would not support this paragraph of sanctions.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjarto said Hungary’s position on the issue of Russia’s oil embargo remains inevitable, despite lengthy negotiations within the EU. On Monday, May 9, HGV reports.
He stressed that the Hungarian government does not support the imposition of an embargo against the Russian Federation. According to the Foreign Minister, the introduction of the sixth package of anti-Russian sanctions will weaken the Hungarian economy and its energy supply.
“Hungary will not vote on the European Commission’s proposal on sanctions against Russia, because it will create a problem for Hungary and there are no options for resolving it,” Szijjártó explained.
Oil from Russia meets 2/3 of Hungarian needs. The European Commission, after a week of debate, proposed to make an exception for Hungary and two countries and allow them to gradually introduce the embargo. However, the potential delay until 2024 is not satisfied in Budapest. The Hungarian authorities want a delay of 5 years.
Meanwhile, Bloomberg reported that the European Union intends to ease oil sanctions against Russia in the sixth package. In particular, the abandonment of the plan completely ban sea shipments of tankers.
According to the publication, the European Union will abandon the idea of †‹вЂ‹ banning the supply of Russian oil to third countries of tankers belonging to EU countries. At the same time, the ban on insurance of such vessels is still on the table and a serious obstacle to exports.
According to Bloomberg, Greece, whose economy is highly dependent on shipping, has insisted on lifting the ban on shipments to third countries. This measure would have a greater impact on Russia’s oil exports, as Greece owns more than a quarter of the world’s oil tankers by capacity.
However, even in its current form, the sanctions will make life difficult for Russia, as the insurance ban will cover most of the world’s fleet of oil tankers carrying Russian oil. The ban would make it nearly impossible to pay for insurance coverage, for example, in the event of an oil spill.
The publication emphasizes that the European Union is still discussing the sixth package of sanctions, trying to overcome Hungary’s objections to Russia’s oil embargo.
It will be recalled that today the German Foreign Ministry said that the European Union will soon agree on a sixth package of sanctions against Russia.
