Viktor Orban, the Hungarian prime minister, is threatening to block the extension of European Union sanctions against Russia.
The ambassadors of EU member states plan to approve the tenth package of sanctions against Russia on February 22, the adoption of which Hungary also blocked. However, the Hungarian prime minister demands that four people be removed from the list of sanctions against Russia. It is not yet known who Orban is demanding to be removed from the sanctions list. This is reported by Politico, citing its own sources.
It is noted that Bucharest also opposes the proposal to extend the sanctions every 12 months, and not every six months. A tentative compromise solution is to renew these sanctions every nine months.
The publication also writes that diplomats and officials in Europe are seriously worried, because in the summer of 2024 Hungary will begin to preside over the EU.
In Brussels, it is assumed that the European Union may agree at the request of Orban, otherwise sanctions against almost 1,400 people and companies will be lifted.
Recall, the media reported that the European Union, within the 10th package of sanctions against Russia, plans to force all banks to report on the assets of the Central Bank of Russia, which are in their accounts.
