In terms of total crop area, Ukraine this season lags behind last year’s numbers of 20% to 30%, depending on the crops. This was announced at a briefing on May 9 by Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food Nikolai Solsky.
In addition to the military invasion of Russia, the course of the sowing campaign was negatively affected by many factors, especially logistics.
“The sowing campaign in Ukraine is quite active. There are understandable difficulties, especially in logistics. Farmers and agricultural businesses are spending less money on basic things – seeds, herbicides. Saving. “Obviously, there are losses in time, let’s call it that, because the curfew, the movement of the equipment, some equipment went to the front, there is less left,” he explained. by Solsky.
There are also problems with fuel storage.
All this, including the cold spring, led to the fact that the sowing campaign was delayed.
“The quality of crops is significantly worse compared to previous years for obvious reasons. It is already having a very negative impact on world markets and worse in the medium or long term,” the head of the Ministry said. of Agrarian Policy stressed.
It will be recalled that on May 5, Ukraine sowed 7.1 million hectares of land with mainly agricultural crops, which is 49.3% of the 14.4 million hectares planned for the current season.
Earlier, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy said that according to the pessimistic scenario, 70% of agricultural land in Ukraine can be planted this year.
