Belarus introduces the death penalty for officials for treason against the state. Such a draft law was already supported by the deputies of the House of Representatives in the second reading.
The first reading took place on December 7, 2022.
The news was published by the press service of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus.
Now the document must be approved by the Council of the Republic, and then it will be handed over to the self-proclaimed president of the country, Alexander Lukashenko, for signature.
The bill allows the use of the death penalty for officials holding public office and persons subject to military status. The reason for capital punishment is the commission of a crime under Art. 356 (treason to the state) of the Criminal Code.
Belarusian deputies propose detaining those suspected of treason, sabotage, espionage and conspiracy for a period of up to 10 days, the term for bringing charges – up to 20 days.
At the same time, those involved in the preparation of sabotage and attacks on institutions enjoying international protection are offered to be released from criminal liability if they contributed to the prevention of these crimes.
As noted in the press service of the House of Representatives, amendments to the legislation are being made “in order to contain destructive elements, as well as to demonstrate a resolute struggle against treason to the state.”
In addition, the new document proposes to set the fine for anti-state crimes up to 50,000 basic units (about UAH 2.7 million).
Currently, Belarus is already investigating cases on charges of treason. Three suspects in sabotage on the railway face the death penalty. This was reported by the investigative committee of Belarus.
The accused are called “traitors to the motherland”, although their trial has not yet begun. Three “rail guerrillas” face execution.
