Fox News Chief Political Analyst Brit Hume said Donald Trump was an “underdog” in the 2020 election as he cast doubt on the former president’s chances in 2024.
Hume spoke to Fox News host Bret Baier on Monday’s “Special Report” about the presidential race after Trump spent the weekend posting nonstop about his likely rival for the Republican nomination, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Hume said it was “inevitable” that Trump would attack DeSantis “because obviously Mr. Trump recognizes that this governor, who just won re-election by nearly 20 points, is right now, in most people’s eyes, a winner “.
“Whereas he, Mr. Trump — although there are skeptics about how it happened — was a loser,” he added.
Trump has liberally used the term “underdog” to criticize individuals and groups he dislikes, including political rivals, journalists, media organizations, terrorists and celebrities.
A staunch conservative, Hume has been highly critical of the former president since the Capitol uprising and often suggests that Trump’s influence over the GOP is waning. It comes amid a reported withdrawal of support for Trump at Fox News and other media organizations owned by Rupert Murdoch.
DeSantis, widely tipped to be a 2024 presidential contender, ended up winning re-election in November’s gubernatorial election. Many commentators called him the biggest midterm winner and Trump the biggest loser after a number of Trump-backed candidates failed to pick up seats.
So far, only two Republicans have announced their 2024 candidacy: Trump and former US ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley.
