Measures against the Russian Federation for the illegal recognition, occupation or annexation of certain territories of Ukraine will be in force for another year.
The Council of the European Union approved the extension of anti-Russian sanctions until February 24, 2024. The decision was published in the Official Journal of the EU on February 21.
The document emphasizes that “the union remains unwavering in its support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders and is committed to the full implementation of the policy of non-recognition regarding the illegal annexation of Russia.”
The decision will take effect on Wednesday, February 22, and concerns sanctions imposed on February 23, 2022 in response to Russia’s recognition of the “DNR” and “LNR” identities.
On October 6, 2022, restrictions were extended in response to the illegal annexation of parts of Ukraine’s Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, and Zaporozhye regions.
There are currently 1,386 individuals and 171 organizations under EU sanctions against Russia.
Remember, on the eve of the head of the European Council, Charles Michel, said that the European Union, within a year after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, adopted the main sanctions against the Kremlin, which will be strengthened in the future.
