The aggressor state is buying civilian drones to use in war.
According to customs documents, some of the commercial drones are coming from Russian distributors supplied by Chinese company DJI, while others are transported through the United Arab Emirates, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Russia’s use of Chinese drones on the battlefield in Ukraine demonstrates that its military is able to obtain critical equipment from abroad despite Western pressure to limit Moscow’s ability to continue the war.
The Pentagon is concerned that China could use the data obtained from these drones to modernize and strengthen its own military.
In September, the Dutch authorities arrested Dmitry Alekseevich Kudryavtsev for allegedly exporting goods to the Russian Federation in violation of international export controls. The Dutch federal prosecutor’s office said Kudryavtsev, owner of Woerd-Tech BV, supplied the drones used by the Russian army.
Trade data suggests that Woerd-Tech has shipped at least $270,000 worth of export-controlled goods to Russia, including parts for DJI drones.
