The NATO Secretary General rejected Ukraine’s demand for cluster munitions and phosphorus incendiary weapons.
Jens Stoltenberg said this in an interview with the German television channel NTV. So he answered at the request of the Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Oleksandr Kubrakov, who asked Western countries to provide the Ukrainian Armed Forces with phosphorus and cluster munitions in order to use them, as the Russian army does.
NATO did not recommend or supply these types of weapons. We supply artillery and other weapons, but not cluster bombs,” Stoltenberg said.
The German Green Party criticizes Ukraine’s request for cluster munitions and phosphorus bombs. The chairman of the Bundestag Committee on European Affairs, Anton Gofreiter, believes that Ukraine is asking for “too much”, and especially “wrong”, according to the politician, Kiev’s request for cluster munitions and phosphorus bombs.
These weapons are banned in most countries, but Russia does not hesitate to use them.
On the sidelines of the Munich Conference, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba reacted to the statement of the German politician:
We have evidence that Russia is using cluster munitions. We understand that these shells are a controversial issue in the world. We are not part of a convention banning the use of cluster munitions. Therefore, there are no legal barriers. And if we get shells, they will only be used against Russian military forces.
A cluster bomb is a projectile that bursts in the air, releasing dozens of small explosive devices capable of covering an area the size of several football fields. Phosphorus ammunition can cause severe burns and poisoning. The use of both weapons is highly controversial, and cluster munitions are prohibited by international law.
