German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, after meeting with NATO colleagues in Brussels, said that the Western allies are trying to raise two full battalions of Leopard 2 tanks to be sent to Ukraine, as promised.
However, it will be difficult to achieve the required number of tanks, Bloomberg reports.
Germany and Portugal are the only two countries that have committed to ship the Leopard 2 in a modern version of the A6. Moreover, Berlin promised 14 tanks, and Portugal – three. The standard size of a Ukrainian battalion is 31 tanks.
We will not reach the size of a battalion,” the minister emphasized.
Poland has assembled about 30 units of the older version of the A4 Leopard 2, nearly enough for a battalion, but many are in poor condition and in need of repairs before they can be deployed, Pistorius noted. These tanks will only reach Ukraine at the end of April, he added.
At the end of January, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Germany and its allies would quickly create two battalions of battle tanks for Ukraine, and the US promised to send 31 equivalent M1 Abrams.
