The United States and the Philippines will hold the largest joint military exercise since 2015. It was reported on February 15 by Reuters.
It is understood that the maneuvers will take place against the backdrop of escalating tensions between Manila and Beijing in the South China Sea.
Philippine Army General Romeo Broner said the annual Balikatan exercise will take place in the second quarter of this year. More than nine thousand soldiers will participate in them.
“All these exercises that we are conducting are a response to all kinds of threats that we may face in the future, both man-made and natural,” he stressed.
The agency recalled that the Philippines has given the US greater access to its military bases as part of efforts to contain China in the South China Sea and with regard to self-ruled Taiwan.
In 2015, more than 11,000 military personnel of both countries participated in joint military exercises.
It was previously reported that the United States and Israel conducted the largest joint military exercise in history, Juniper Oak.
