The International Committee of the Red Cross is still talking on the Russian side on access to Ukrainians who were forcibly brought into the Russian Federation and therefore have “insufficient information” about their fate. This was stated in an interview with the Swiss edition NZZ by ICRC operations director Dominik Stilgart.
“We are still talking to the Russians about the access of Ukrainian refugees to Russia. We do not have enough information about what is really going on there., And civilians who worked for the Ukrainian authorities,” said Stilgart.
The ICRC’s director of operations noted that these groups of people are protected by international law, and therefore they cannot be tortured or killed.
“But if this is observed, then where do these people end up? We don’t know that,” he added.
In answer to questions, Stilgart denied accusations against the ICRC of cooperating with the Russian authorities on the issue of the deportation of Ukrainians to Russia. According to him, the International Committee of the Red Cross “will never take people anywhere against their will.”
Stilgart expressed hope that the successful operation to evacuate civilians from Azovstal would facilitate further evacuation, as “now both sides are convinced that it is working.”
Recall that the International Committee of the Red Cross responded to the accusations of the Ukrainian side of “impotence” and “forced deportation” of Mariupol residents in the Russian Federation.
