US demands death penalty for jihadist who killed eight people in New York

U.S. Attorney’s Office said on Monday that the Uzbek who killed eight people in NYsix years ago, should have been executed despite President Joe Biden’s opposition to the death penalty.

This is the first time he Ministry of Justicesince Biden has taken office, seeks the death penalty for the convict.

Even though the Democrat administration has declared a moratorium on all federal executions if Saifullo Saipov receives a sentence that can be carried out during a new presidency or if the current one lifts the moratorium.

The same 12 jurors who convicted Saipov last month of various murders and terrorism returned to court on Monday to hear arguments at the first hearing to sentence him.

“We will ask for the death penalty not because it is easy, but because it is an appropriate sentence in this case,” prosecutor Amanda Hole said.

Among the dead was a group of five Argentine friends. At least twelve more people were wounded before the police shot Saipov in the stomach.

It was the deadliest attack in NY since September 11, 2001, when members of al-Qaeda hijacked two planes and crashed them into the World Trade Center.

Saipov claimed to have acted on behalf of a jihadist group. Islamic state.

The jury will have to make a unanimous decision, which Saipov can appeal.

IN USA, most executions are carried out by the states, not the federal government. New York abolished the death penalty at the state level, and its last execution was in 1963. (AFP)
