Iranian President, Ebrahim Raisiwill visit China next week as part of a two-day trip to be held at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinpingsaid an official source.
Raisi will remain in the Asian country from February 14 to 16, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said, without going into details of the Iranian leader’s agenda.
Xi and Raisi met last September in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, during a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), where Iran signed a memorandum of accession to the organization, joined by Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India and Pakistan.
After this meeting, the Chinese President assured that his country wishes to “strengthen cooperation” with Iran within this framework, and expressed his support for Raisi “when it comes to protecting their sovereignty and national dignity.”
In addition, Xi then noted that China will continue to play a “constructive role” in restarting the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) reached in 2015 on Iran’s nuclear program, and pledged to support Iran in “protecting its legitimate rights and interests.”
“We are ready to expand our communication and coordination with Iran to achieve new progress in our bilateral relations,” the Chinese leader said.
Agreement on economic cooperation
For his part, Raisi indicated that his country is “firmly committed to strengthening cooperation” with China and “intensifying exchanges” between the two countries.
China And Iran In 2021, they entered into an economic cooperation agreement for a period of 25 years, which generally provides for Chinese investment in Iranian energy and infrastructure.
In turn, Tehran, a major hydrocarbon producer hit hard by US sanctions, provides Beijing with a stable supply of oil and gas at competitive prices.
The Sino-Iranian partnership began to take shape after Xi’s visit to Tehran in January 2016, during which 17 cooperation agreements were signed and talks began to boost trade to $600 billion in a decade.
In recent years, Beijing has repeatedly voiced its opposition to U.S. sanctions on Iran and support for resuming negotiations to implement the Iranian nuclear deal, which the North American nation abandoned in 2018.
