Cyprus has elected a new president

Christodoulides will become the eighth president of the Mediterranean state, he will decide how to break the deadlock in negotiations to reunite the ethnically divided island.

The former head of the Cypriot Foreign Ministry, Nikos Christodoulides, will become the new president of the country, according to the result of counting 100% of the votes, according to the Cyprus Mail.

Christodoulides received 51.91% of the vote, while his opponent, career diplomat Andreas Mavroyiannis, a former chief peace negotiator with the Turkish Cypriots and the former permanent representative of Cyprus to the UN, received 48.09%.

Christodoulides will become the eighth president of the Mediterranean nation.

He will decide how to break the deadlock in negotiations to reunify the ethnically divided island, as well as how to deal with illegal migration, labor disputes and efforts to restore the country’s image tarnished by corruption scandals.

Cyprus was divided after the Turkish invasion in 1974.

The latest round of peace talks for the reunification of Cyprus failed in mid-2017. Christodoulides said he wants talks to continue but sees a need to revise a UN regulatory framework proposed in 2017 .

Recall that the Cypriot authorities revoked the citizenship of 222 investors and their families. This figure includes 63 investors and 159 of their relatives. The passports were revoked as part of an effort to restore the reputation tarnished by the “investment for passports” program, which, as the investigation revealed, illegally granted citizenship in hundreds of cases.
