China intends to triple its stockpile of nuclear warheads by 2035 to 900.

The leadership of the Chinese army considers it necessary to develop its nuclear potential against the backdrop of a possible escalation of tensions with the United States, Kyodo reported.

Tensions between China and the United States intensified after Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan last August.

Some Western experts warn that if China modernizes its military and builds up a nuclear arsenal, it may abandon its current no-first-use policy.

The largest nuclear arsenal is now owned by Russia, with 5,977 nuclear warheads, according to calculations by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. At the same time, the US has 5,428 warheads.
