A formal decision is expected to be made in the coming weeks as there is an informal agreement among the 30 Member States that Stoltenberg should remain in office beyond his term on September 30, 2023.
The agency noted that the term extension would give Stoltenberg the opportunity to chair NATO’s 75th anniversary summit in Washington in April 2024, and possibly become president of the World Bank, as David Malpass will step down at the same time.
A decision has not yet been made on who will replace Stoltenberg in the post, but leading candidates for the position include Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace.
