“Unfortunately, markets are being looted in some places. The state is responding to this by imposing a state of emergency,” the president said in a public statement in Gaziantep, a major city east of the earthquake’s epicenter.
The president said the three-month state of emergency will come into effect today after receiving the approval of parliament, where his party, the AKP, has a majority.

The opposition, led by the social-democratic party CHP, as well as numerous social media users criticize the actions of the authorities after the earthquakes.
