Republican Nancy Mace (SC) roasted prominent members of her own party Wednesday at the Washington Press Club Foundation’s annual convention dinner.
The fundraising dinner was billed as an evening of “light banter”, but Mace’s digs were anything but. And she managed to beat House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and former President Donald Trump alike in McCarthy’s contortions to win the speakership last month.
“I haven’t seen anyone take such a stand to appease the crazy Republicans since Stormy Daniels,” Mace said, referring to the adult film actor who accused Trump of having an affair with her in 2006.
Mace then attacked Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), whom he recently labeled a “fraud.” Gaetz helped lead the Freedom Caucus radicals who opposed McCarthy’s speakership until McCarthy promised concessions.
“Well, let’s be honest. We all knew Matt Gaetz was never going to let the vote go to 18,” Mace said. The joke about Gaetz’s alleged sexual relationship with a 17-year-old drew shocked reactions from the crowd.
“I have a message for Matt tonight. He really wanted to be here tonight, but he couldn’t find a babysitter, to be his date, I mean. Come on.”
Mace was not the only politician to poke fun at his own party members.
Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) followed President Joe Biden on a clip showing him clapping out of sync with blacks at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta last month.
