The purpose of the conference is to coordinate donor actions and gather resources to support early recovery and aid in the affected areas of Turkey and Syria.
The head of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson agreed to hold a donor conference in support of the people of Turkey and Syria affected by the earthquakes. This was reported by Interfax-Ukraine.
“We are all shocked by the devastating impact of the earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria this week. Now the priority is to work around the clock to save as many lives as possible, as many people are still trapped under the rubble,” said von der Leyen.
The head of the EC assured that the EU will support the population of the two countries.
“The purpose of the high-level conference, which will be open to EU Member States, neighboring countries, UN members, international financial institutions and other relevant stakeholders, is to coordinate the donor action and mobilize resources to support early recovery and relief for the affected regions of Turkey and Syria,” the EC communiqué said.
It will be remembered that on February 6, two strong earthquakes occurred in the southeast of Turkey, which also affected neighboring Syria.
