Washington Post columnists Paul Waldman and Greg Sargent pointed out that Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ (R) Republican rejection of President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address was emblematic of a larger problem for the GOP.
Sanders, the former White House press secretary for Donald Trump, waded into the culture wars during her speech, talking about “woke” mobsters and CRT.
In their Wednesday column, Waldman and Sargent said they “see Sanders throwing extremes online mandates — just months after his party performed poorly in the midterms while campaigning against these things — clearly demonstrate a problem for the GOP.”
“Republicans are extremely adept at attracting attention, using their formidable media apparatus to draw attention to the manufactured controversies of the moment,” they wrote. “But they are much less adept at persuasion these days the widest public.”
“Biden talked about protecting Social Security and the need to continue creating the green and tech jobs of the future, many for Americans without college degrees,” they concluded. “Then Sanders attacked the confusing acronyms. Democrats should I like to bring this contrast to 2024.”
