Among the ruins of a building in Jindires, a city in northwestern Syria hit hard by the earthquake, rescuers found Babyborn under the rubble and still tied by the umbilical cord to her dead mother.
This girl is the only survivor from a family where all members died when their four-story house collapsed.
In this city near the border with TurkeyOn Monday, ambulance crews found the bodies of his father Abdallah Mleihan, his mother Aafra, his three sisters, his brother and his aunt.
“We were looking for Abu Rudayna (nickname of Abdala) and his family. First we found his sister, then his wife, then Abu Rudayna, they were together against each other,” family relative Khalil Sawadi, still shocked, told AFP. .
“Then we heard a noise and started digging (…), cleared the place and found this little girl, thank God,” he says.

The newborn still had the umbilical cord attached to her mother. “We cut it open and my cousin took the baby to the hospital,” he continues.
A video circulating on social media shows a man carrying a naked, dust-covered baby through the rubble, the umbilical cord still hanging down.
In icy frost, another throws a blanket over the creature.

Baby she was taken to a hospital in the nearby city of Afrin, where she was placed in an incubator and given vitamins.
“She arrived with limbs numb from the cold, her blood pressure dropped. We gave her first aid and put her on perfusion because she went without food for too long,” Dr Hani Maarouf told AFP.

The girl has bruises, but, according to the doctor, her condition is stable. “He was probably born seven hours after the earthquake,” he adds. He weighs 3,175 kg, which means he was born at term, he says.
With limited funds, it took rescuers several hours to remove the rubble and retrieve the bodies of the rest of the family.
They were placed side by side in a relative’s house, covered with sheets, while waiting for the funeral.
In the room Khalil Sawadi lists their names. “We have been displaced from Deir ez-Zor, Abdullah is my cousin and I am married to his sister,” he says.
The family fled the troubled Deir ez-Zor region further east, believing they would be safe in Jindires, a city that has been controlled by Turkish forces and pro-Turkish rebel groups since 2018.
