Sweden and Finland will decide whether to apply to join the Alliance this month.
NATO will increase its presence near Sweden’s borders and in the Baltic Sea while considering the Scandinavian country’s application to join the North Atlantic Alliance. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said this on Thursday, May 5, in an interview with Swedish public broadcaster SVT, Voice of America reports.
“I am convinced that we will find a solution to meet Sweden’s security needs during the transition,” Stoltenberg said.
“From that potential moment Sweden bid and NATO said it wanted Sweden to join[sa Alliance]NATO will have an obligation to guarantee Sweden’s security, ”the NATO Secretary General said, adding that this would include strengthening its presence around Sweden and in the Baltic Sea.
The other day, Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde said the US had given Sweden “security guarantees” for the application period, but “no specific security guarantees.”
Sweden and Finland are expected to decide whether to apply to join NATO this month.
Russia has previously warned Sweden and Finland of “serious consequences” and it could deploy nuclear weapons and hypersonic missiles in Kaliningrad if Sweden and Finland become NATO members.
Recall that NATO exercises Arrow-22 began in Finland.
Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry accused NATO of a “proxy war” and warned of the high possibility of expanding the zone of hostilities beyond Ukraine.
