A unique optical phenomenon, the lunar halo, was observed over Kyiv on the evening of February 4.
Ice crystals act like a prism for moonlight, allowing us to see the white ring around the moon.
The Hydrometeorological Center reported that in Ukraine the halo can be observed 70-120 times a year under favorable weather conditions.
Folk signs say that the halo around the Moon is “a sign from God that His glory will soon come, and Evil on Earth will be punished.” Halo was considered a particularly bad sign for the conquerors.
The halo is caused by the refraction of moonlight from ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. Refraction turns the atmosphere into a huge lens and causes bright rings of light around the Moon or Sun. Depending on this, halos appear – day or night.
In ancient times, people associated the appearance of lunar halos with the approach of bad weather, especially in winter. But scientists advise against predicting bad weather in this way.
