Young man arrested in 2021 after breaking into Windsor castle with a loaded crossbow, he admitted on Friday that his intention was to attack Queen Elizabeth II, whom he wanted to kill in retaliation for Britain’s colonial past.
During a video appearance at London Criminal Court Jaswant Singh ChailThe 21-year-old former employee of a supermarket in Southampton, southern England, pleaded guilty to all three counts.
These included offenses under the little-used Treason Act of 1842, attempting to “injure the person of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II”, as well as threatening to kill and illegal possession of weapons.
Since he admitted to the charges, there will be no trial, and he will be sentenced at a March 31 hearing.
Detention
Jaswant Singh Chail He was arrested on December 25, 2021 in the area around the castle, located 40 km east of London, where the 95-year-old monarch retired at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Queen spent Christmas there alone – the first since the death of her husband Felipe and the last before his own death in September 2022 – after retiring due to the revival COVID-19to go, as usual, to his residence in Sandringham, in the east of England, to celebrate the holidays with his family.
After the arrest, the suspect was placed in a psychiatric hospital. He is currently at Broadmoor High Security Hospital in southwest London.
Newspaper Sun released images of a video allegedly posted on Snapchat minutes before the suspect entered the castle grounds, reportedly jumping over the castle walls thanks to a rope ladder.
On it, he was seen with a loaded crossbow, wearing a black hoodie, and his face was covered by an intimidating black metal mask. He was heard to say, “I am sorry for what I have done and what I am about to do. I will try to kill Queen Elizabeth.”
According to the prosecution, the video, recorded a few days earlier, he sent to about twenty people before entering the premises. (AFP)
