The 16-year-old girl died this Saturday after shark Bitten her while she was swimming in a Western Australian river, authorities said.
A young woman was seriously injured when sharkthe type of which is not specified, bit her on the swan river near Fremantle, a suburb of Perth, the state government said in a statement.
She was pulled out of the water, but her death was pronounced on the spot. Attempts to resuscitate her have been unsuccessful, said Paul Robinson, Fremantle District Police Inspector.
“Too early, they told us at this point that she was with friends in the river,” Robinson said at a press conference.
“They were on jet skis. They may have seen a pod of dolphins nearby and the young woman jumped in to swim next to the dolphins,” he added.
traumatic incident
Calling the incident “very, very traumatic,” Robinson said the victim’s family, originally from Perth, was “absolutely devastated.”
According to him, experts say it’s unusual to find sharks in that part of the river. (AFP)
