Competition between factions within the Russian elite is probably partly responsible for the decline in convict recruitment.
In the British Ministry of Defence reportedthat the scale of recruitment of prisoners by the Russian PMC Wagner has significantly decreased compared to the peak period between summer and autumn 2022.
So, according to the information of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia (FSIN), published on January 31, the number of prisoners in the country is 433 thousand people, which indicates a reduction of six thousand prisoners from November 2022. The data of the Federal Penitentiary Service indicates a decrease of 23 thousand from September to November.
“The recruitment of Wagner is probably the main factor contributing to this trend,” the intelligence agency said.
It is also reported that unconfirmed data from the Ukrainian military over the past ten days indicates that the Russian Federation has become less dependent on live wave-style attacks by Wagner militants in key sectors.
Significant tensions between Wagner and the Russian Ministry of Defense are on public display, according to the British Ministry of Defense.
“Competition between factions in the Russian elite is probably partly responsible for the decline in convict recruitment,” added British intelligence.
Earlier it was reported that about 50,000 Wagner PMC mercenaries were in Ukraine, including 10,000 contract soldiers and 40,000 prisoners from Russian prisons.
