Several German officials have discussed with the Qatari Foreign Ministry the possible purchase of 15 Gepard tanks for Ukraine.
German authorities have approved the supply of Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine from industrial stocks and are negotiating the purchase of 15 Gepard tanks from Qatar for shipment to Kyiv. On Friday, February 3, Reuters reported with reference to the Sueddeutsche Zeitung.
It was noted that the delivery of Leopard tanks to Ukraine can happen at any time after their repair.
Rheinmetall and Flensburger Fahrzeugbau Gesellschaft (FFG) want to refurbish dozens of Leopard 1 tanks and may supply them to Ukraine if Kyiv agrees to buy them.
Several German officials have held talks with Qatar’s Foreign Ministry over the possible purchase of 15 Gepard tanks bought by Doha to secure World Cup stadiums, the paper said, adding that Berlin is trying to get more bullets from Qatar.
“Gepard has proven itself well in the war in Ukraine. If we get more from partners here, it will certainly help the Ukrainians,” said German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.
