USA announced this Thursday that it had discovered a suspected spy balloon from Chinawhich is currently flying over its territory at high altitude and which “poses no military or physical danger” to anyone on the surface.
Pentagon spokesman Pat Ryder clarified in a statement that currently USA it “closely” follows the movement of a balloon that flies at a higher altitude than commercial air transport.
“Once the balloon was discovered, the government USA immediately took steps to protect against the collection of confidential information” Chinapointed out Ryder, who pointed out that this is not the first time that a device of this type has been discovered by the authorities in recent years.
For his part, a senior Defense Ministry official told reporters on the phone that they believed the balloon belonged to China and that US President Joe Biden was briefed about it.
In fact, the president requested possible “options” from the military leaders USAand Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin met Wednesday with Pentagon officials despite being on a business trip to the Philippines.
Collection of intelligence materials?
Both heads of the Joint Chiefs of Staff United States., General Mark Milley, as well as the head of the Northern Command, General Glen VanHurke, strongly recommended that “no kinetic action be taken” because of the risk this could pose to people on the surface due to the possible fall of debris from the balloon.
In that sense, a Department of Defense source explained that the device is “large enough” to cause damage if dropped on the ground.
He explained that on Wednesday they were evaluating the possibility of shooting him down in a sparsely populated area of Montana (USA), but chose not to risk it, and that they received warnings from pilots who spotted him, despite the fact that he was flying high enough.
A Department of Defense source assured that the device “has limited added value” in relation to intelligence collection.
The announcement came before US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken began a two-day visit to the US. Chinaduring the first trip by a US foreign secretary to an Asian country since 2018.
A Ministry of Defense spokesman said they contacted Chinese officials through various channels after the balloon was discovered, including through the relevant embassies. China and the US in Washington and Beijing.
“We conveyed to them the seriousness with which we treat this issue,” the source said, adding that the United States “will do everything necessary to protect its people and its territory.”
