The gas situation is different from the oil situation, it cannot be replaced and the shutdown of the Russian gas valve has not been discussed so far.
The European Union currently has no plans to leave Russia’s gas. This was stated by the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, in an interview that on Thursday, May 5, was broadcast on the Spanish radio station Cadena CER, reports Interfax.
According to him, if it is possible to change the oil, the situation with gas is different.
“The oil market is global and there are other suppliers. Gas is another problem. It’s not just an energy source. Gas cannot be replaced by any other petrochemical product,” Charles Michel said, adding that the closure of the Russian gas valve is not in question at present.
It was previously reported that the European Union intends to intensify cooperation with African countries to reduce Russia’s gas dependence by two-thirds by the end of 2022.
Recall that in early March, the European Commission presented the REPowerEU plan, which provides for a complete rejection of all types of fuel from Russia by 2030. At the same time, EU countries will be able to reduce gas consumption from Russian Federation of 100 billion cubic meters by the end of 2022. This is two-thirds of annual gas imports from the Russian Federation.
